Event: Inaugural Meeting for Cooperation Between UNESCO Chairs with a particular focus on Music

Location: Ethnomusicology and Cultural Anthropology Laboratory, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens hosted the Inaugural Meeting for Cooperation between UNESCO Chairs: The UNESCO Chair “Transcultural Music Studies” and the newly inscribed  UNESCO Chair “Anthropology of Traditional Music: Representing and Repositioning Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

The event brought together Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto, representing the UNESCO Chair “Transcultural Music Studies” at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar, as well as teaching staff and students from the Department of Musicology of the host university.

Purpose:

  • Initiate cooperation between the UNESCO Chair at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar and the newly inscribed “Anthropology of Traditional Music: Representing and Repositioning Intangible Cultural Heritage” Chair at the host university

Key Activities:

  • Welcome address and introductions
  • Presentations on potential areas for collaboration
  • Exploration on potential synergies between the Chairs
  • In-depth discussions with MA and PhD candidates
  • Exploration of opportunities for student exchanges and joint initiatives under the Erasmus Program and creation of Summer School for PhD Candidates

Next Steps:

  • Signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two Universities 
  • Plans for collaborative research initiatives
  • Consideration of joint events and academic exchanges

The ongoing communication and coordination between the UNESCO Chairs will ensure that this promising partnership will contribute significantly to the study of Music within the context of UNESCO, bringing together expertise and resources from musicology to advance the understanding and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage.
